Diphtheria Tetanus and Polio are potentially serious bacterial diseases that can be safely prevented in adults and children with vaccines.

Diphtheria is a serious infection of the nose and throat caused by diphtheria bacteria. The bacteria are spread through the air by people sneezing or coughing and by direct skin-to-skin contact. The disease can result in very serious breathing problems. It can also cause heart failure and paralysis. About 1 in 10 people who get diphtheria may die. The vaccine works by causing the body to produce its own protection (antibodies) against these diseases.

Diphtheria, tetanus and polio

Tetanus (also known as lockjaw) is a serious disease that causes painful tightening of the muscles, usually all over the body. It can lead to “locking” of the jaw so the person cannot open their mouth or swallow. Up to 1 in 5 people who get tetanus may die.

Polio is a disease caused by infection with a virus. While most polio infections show no symptoms, others can result in paralysis of arms or legs and even death. Paralysis occurs in about 1 in 200 people infected with the polio virus. Polio can be spread by contact with the bowel movements (stool) of an infected person. This can happen from eating food or drinking water contaminated with stool.

The teenage booster, also known as the 3-in-1 or the Td/IPV vaccine, is given to boost protection against 3 separate diseases: tetanus, diphtheria and polio.

Diphtheria Tetanus and Polio is a single injection given into the muscle of the upper arm. As with all vaccines, some people may have minor side effects, such as swelling, redness or tenderness where the injection is given.

Sometimes a small painless lump develops, but it usually disappears in a few weeks.
